Fez and Portal are perfect partners in this sawn-off free mashup

Phil Fish may have infamously off Fez 2 almost a decennary back. But thankfully, a odd mash-up has conferred the blocky platformer new life-time (and the vague promise of cake).

Released backmost in June, Feztal is a short impervious-of-concept from Krzyhau, who you might reminiscence from those cursed Portal 2 maps in the first place this year. As part of a long-moving serial that twisted Valve's puzzler into wild "what if?" scenarios, he posted a myopic video that asked "what if Portal 2 was Fes". Turns out, information technology only took around a month to discover it'd make for a damn fine puzzle game—though I'd somehow missed its brimfull release before now.

It's a shame I did, mind, because it's shocking how naturally Portal's mechanics fit into Fez. That game, if you don't think of, was a 2D platformer that allow you rotate the world along a 3D axis to search and wor puzzles. Adding portal-able surfaces that remain betwixt dimensions feels like an casual addition to that form.

But Krzyhau has also utterly nailed Fez's aesthetic. Yes, he's flat-outgoing cribbed a couple of sounds and animations here and in that location, but from a bespoke title card to a synth-flavoured reimagining of the Portal soundtrack, Feztal really does feel like an administrative body spin-off. The only attaint is its length, acquiring its point across in just a few screens that last maybe 10 minutes, ending in a room scrawled in Fez's fake words (itself a puzzle that Krzyhau notes may require "last-game Fes knowledge").

That said, what weensy in that location is has plenty of legs. And whether IT's from Krzyhau or someone other, Feztal makes a strong case for a full game supported this marriage of mechanics. Feztal is currently free to download over on Itch.
